Census, the populace was 12,135. New Carrollton is positioned 12 miles (19 km) east of central Washington, D.C.

He had received a charter for a City of Carrollton from the Maryland General Assembly four years earlier, on April 11, 1953.
Carrollton was titled after early Maryland settler Charles Carroll of Carrollton, a delegate to the Continental Congress and signer of the Declaration of Independence.
As two other Maryland communities were also titled Carrollton, a voter popular vote on May 2, 1966, allowed the renaming of the improve to New Carrollton.
